Karisma is one of the most beautiful women of the film industry who had the ability to captivate the audience. Even though, she failed to rise up to the expectation in her first few flicks, the transformation that took in her was enough to get the nation talking about the blue eyed Kapoor girl. She gave some worthwhile performance with her beauty and talent.
Karisma can be easily called the true diva with great looks and intelligence. She was born on 25th June 1974, to Randhir Kapoor and Babita. She was born into a family that breathed cinema. Bother her parents were actors and she got in inheritance from a strong family lineage of Prithvi Raj Kapoor. This grand daughter of Raj Kapoor, Lolo, as she is fondly called, was literally born with a silver spoon but the industry didn’t take her for her Khandani acting skills rather she tasted failures that helped her grow into a complete actor eventually.
The enigmatic and charming Karisma started her career with Prem Qaidi which released in 1991. Though the film made it clear that there has been a bright star born she was criticized for everything, be it cloths to her wild looks. She had a spark about her. The energy she added to the scenes was good yet, the film fraternity as well as the audience was in no mood to accept a star daughter at face value. She saw some subsequent failure in the subsequent years.
Some of her films with big stars didn’t appeal much. These films are Nischaiy with Salman Khan, Jigar with Ajay Devgan and Police Officer with Jackie Shroff. Then she took up some easy going romantic comedy films with Govinda like Raja Babu, Khuddar, Coolie No 1 etc. She was slammed for her sexy image, overacting and dance moves. Though these movies were box office hits, she was condemned by critics and media. She got a chance to change her image and do some good films.
Films like Aatish, Gopi Kishen and Bal Bramhachari found her learning the trick. Then came the big hit Raja Hindustani opposite Aamir Khan which saw her give her best yet. The film pleased the audience to such an extent that she was lifted to the A category instantly. His role was offered to Juhi Chawla but she denied the offer though she had a pretty good chemistry with Aamir Khan. For this Karisma worked hard on her looks, diction and expressions. She received the Filmfare Best Actress award for this role. She still continued to do some easy comedies with Govinda but she definitely developed a lot over the years.
Karisma’s sexy lissome figure and her cherubic smile was enough to flow the audience into the theatre. She ruled the roost for years. Then came Dil To Pagal Hai, yet another offer rejected by Juhi Chawla with Shah Rukh Khan. She showed her dancing skills to a great extent in the film and the film got her the national award as well as the Filmfare award for Best Supporting Actress category.
Karisma’s Biwi No 1 failed in box office and the Kanjeevaram saris avatar was not loved by everyone. She started looking for meaningful roles and took up the challenging role in Fiza and she surprised everyone with yet another Filmfare trophy for Best Actress.
Karisma was signed in by Shyam Benegal for playing the title role in Zubeidaa. This was her first true art film. She silenced the critics by getting the Filmfare Critics Awards for Best Actress. After this Karisma started taking fewer roles and Shakti, which came in 2002 was an adaptation from Not without My Daughter, Karisma took to acting in television. Her serial, Karishma — The Miracles of Destiny saw her play the title role.
Karisma married businessman Sanjay Kapur on 29th September 2003 and then found motherhood with daughter Samaira. Karisma has not expressed any intention for making a comeback but she was no doubt one of the brightest stars of Indian film industry.
Happy Birthday Karisma!
