â??Arekti Premer Golpoâ??: The First Bengali Project On Alternative Sex

Published on

December 18, 2010 : ‘Arekti Premer Golpo’ which had its inaugural screening at the 60th Internationale Filmfestspiele held in Berlin in February 2010 is now ready for its first screening in India and director Kaushik Ganguly talks about the justification of using filmmaker Rituporno Ghosh for his lead character. In a statement to the media, Kaushik Ganguly says that Rituporno Ghosh was his first and last choice for playing documentary filmmaker Abhiroop Sen in ‘Arekti Premer Golpo’ and candidly admits that it was the master director’s body language which inspired him to use Rituda for the project. While Kaushik Ganguly himself has made a telefilm based on the subject of same sex relationships, his big screen venture comes with a difference because it narrates real life events of Chapal Bhaduri, a theater actor in 1960s Bengal.

In his statement to the media, Kaushik Ganguly says that it was very difficult for him to direct Rituporno Ghosh because being a director himself, Rituda had his own mindset regarding a particular shot. In fact, Rituporno Ghosh’s and his directorial style is very different, says Kaushik Ganguly. Nevertheless, Rituporno Ghosh had a great respect for Kaushik Ganguly’s body of work and considering that he knew the script of ‘Arekti Premer Golpo’ better than Kaushik Ganguly, it was easy for the duo go ahead with their work!

Rituporno Ghosh plays a gay filmmaker Abhiroop Sen in ‘Arekti Premer Golpo’. His cinematographer Basu, played by Indraneil Sengupta, is a bisexual and is in love with Abhiroop. On the other hand Basu is also married. A second track of the film shows the life of Chapal Bhaduri, a theater actor who played only women’s parts and in reality feels like a woman in a man’s body. However, Chapal Bhaduri has always faced discrimination unlike Abhiroop Sen and it is his life story which becomes the subject matter for Abhiroop Sen’s latest documentary work. The film will change one’s perception towards alternative sex, promises Kaushik Ganguly.
